At Broadleaf Ranch, we are proud to offer Equine Assisted Mental Health services. Horses are the perfect partner due to their sensitive nature and, when carried out in a safe environment with certified professionals, it can be a powerful yet gentle way to work through problems and provide a confidence boost. Almost all work is done on the ground with no riding involved, so no riding experience is required. Some interventions do include occasional mounted work, but this will only be done under strict guidance if and when the client is ready.
What is Equine Assisted Mental Health?
Equine Assisted Mental Health (also known as Equine Assistance Psychotherapy) incorporates horses into therapeutic processes. Different needs require different interventions, but your sessions may include observation, bonding exercises, and leading the horse through activities that have a parallel with day-to-day life experiences, helping people to work through situations and understand from different perspectives. Many say that connecting with the horse on such a deep level helps them connect more fully with themselves. And, of course, all sessions are supervised by a certified professional, providing total safety and supportive guidance throughout.
Equine Assistance Psychotherapy has proven benefits in many areas, such as emotional regulation, impulse control, self-confidence, trust-building and the ability to handle responsibility.

How does it work?
Horses are a large and majestic creature, yet their quiet power and sensitive nature makes them easy to bond with on a deep and intuitive level. This can be especially true of those who are non-verbal, or where traditional therapy or intervention has not worked or is not seen as culturally appropriate.
Horses radiate an air of calmness, which can help others regulate their emotions, removing the barriers that prevent them from connecting with themselves or others. The Equine Assisted Mental Health modality ensures people connect with the moment, so they can be present with their horse and communicate more fully. This deep connection can help them explore personal insights and provides a safe mental space for people to work through problems or explore themselves more fully.
Horses are non-judgmental and bonding with them is in sensory experience. The sights, smells, sounds and temperament of your horse make the experience rooted in us at a core level, making it unforgettable and all-encompassing.
Horses can help to rewrite past traumas, open ourselves up to others and help us connect with the present moment, away from the distractions of regular life. Their natural unbiased nature can bring out elements of us that we couldn’t verbalize or were unaware were even present. Our therapy horses are chosen as they excel at these qualities. We can’t wait for you to meet them.

Horses are the perfect gentle giants for therapeutic purposes. The trust is felt on both sides, with an instant bond present. They are a proven aid to the therapeutic process.
Horses are highly sensitive to nonverbal communication. Those undergoing therapy will receive unbiased feedback through safe and powerful emotional acknowledgement.

Horses are safe companions that radiate healing energy through their calm yet dynamic exteriors. All relationships are facilitated by trained professionals for unforgettable memories.
